China and India did not condemn the entry into the Russian Federation of the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
These two major Asian powers refused to vote in the UN Security Council (SC) for a resolution on the non-recognition of the referendums passed on the now former Ukrainian territory.
Explaining Beijing’s position, China’s permanent representative to the UN Zhang Jun noted that the UN Security Council should be objective and impartial.
In his view, the actions of the Security Council should be aimed at defusing tensions and resolving the crisis, not at its escalation. The Chinese envoy urged the parties to the conflict to find a way to reach a diplomatic settlement.
For his part, India’s representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboy also confirmed that his country was abstaining from voting. She also opposed the escalation of militant rhetoric and called for a way back to negotiations.
“In view of the development of the situation, India abstains from voting”, – said the permanent representative.
Recall that on the eve of Russia blocked in the UN Security Council a resolution on the non-recognition of referendums in four regions. The document was prepared by the United States and Albania.
He called the plebiscites held in the Donbass, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions illegal. Ten countries voted in favor of the resolution, four states, including Brazil, abstained.
