Human settlements in India are sometimes located very close to the habitats of wild animals. This leads from time to time to sometimes dangerous conflicts – as recently in the town of Jorhat.
Leopard bites 15 people in India
In India, a leopard bit 15 people. The animal was likely hunting in the town of Jorhat in Assam during the attack since the start of the week, a forestry department official told The Times of India on Tuesday. There is a forest nearby.
Video released by Indian news agency ANI shows the predator jumping over a fence and then getting into a car. The victims were taken to hospital with bite wounds, a hospital spokesperson told local media.
The animal was probably injured by a human
The leopard was finally captured on Tuesday, Rathin Barman, head of the Wildlife Trust of India, told the New Indian Express. Several fractures were found on one of the animal’s legs.
Appropriate treatment was applied to them and it was believed that they were caused by a human attack on an animal. Barman suspected that because of this, the animal also behaved aggressively.
In India, conflicts constantly arise between people and wild animals, such as leopards and tigers, which roam freely in the forests. With deforestation, human settlements sometimes move very close to predator habitats. This can lead them to kill people or their livestock, and people to kill animals, sometimes in retaliation.
