The Russian Geographical Society announces a competition for participation in the first complex expedition in the history of the Russian Geographical Society to the understudied regions of India. From December 30, 2022 to January 16, 2023, volunteers, accompanied by scientists, will explore the territories of the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland.
The goal of the project is to create a promising scientific direction for the annual expeditions of the Russian Geographical Society to the Indian Himalayas, as well as to conduct in-depth studies of natural, historical, cultural and military objects of scientific interest. As part of the expedition of the Russian Geographical Society, ecological, biological, geographical, geological, soil and ethnographic studies will be carried out, as well as a search for the crash sites of Allied military aircraft in 1943-1945. A documentary film is planned.
The expedition to India is a unique project aimed at reviving the interest of the Russian Geographical Society in the study of the foothills of the Himalayas. It is also intended to become a platform for the further development of the activities of the Russian Geographical Society abroad. Expedition participants will have a rare opportunity to collect materials for research in various scientific fields under special climatic and ethnocultural conditions.
– For the first time in a long time, the Russian Geographical Society is organizing such an expedition to the unique and hard-to-reach regions of India: the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. An example for us is Andrei Evgenievich Snesarev, a military geographer, orientalist and full member of the Russian Geographical Society, who studied the territory between Russian Turkestan and India at the beginning of the 20th century. We have before us a very unusual scientific challenge to study this region, it is a unique opportunity for scientists — said Anton Yurmanov, director of the youth department of the Russian Geographical Society.
When submitting an application for participation in the competition, it is necessary to provide a detailed justification (for which studies it is necessary to collect materials) and attach proof of belonging to a university or scientific institute where further work with the collected materials and data will be carried out. After an expertise and if the request is approved by the Indian side, a decision will be made on the possibility of inclusion in the expedition.
You can find more information about the possibility of collecting materials on portal of the Russian Geographical Society “The World Around”. You can learn more about the expedition and join its team on the website of the Youth Club of the Russian Geographical Society.
