The US House of Representatives has approved an amendment exempting India from sanctions over the purchase of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile (SAM) systems. This was reported on July 15 by the Turkish edition of Haber7.
The US decision is said to have angered Turkey, against which Washington has imposed restrictions in similar circumstances. In addition, due to restrictions, Ankara was excluded from the production program of fifth-generation F-35 fighters.
“CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) sanctions against Turkey will not apply to India. The refusal to impose sanctions on India further confirms that the CAATSA sanctions against Turkey were never linked to the S-400. The main purpose of these sanctions is the desire of the United States to pacify Turkey and subject its national security to its discretion,” Turkish media write.
Earlier, the Pentagon called India’s purchase of the S-400 a violation of restrictions on acquiring Russian weapons. Experts believe that the United States has changed its mind due to India’s expected counter-sanctions, which could seriously affect American interests.
At the same time, experts pointed out that America can expect a tough reaction from Ankara, which is also capable of putting pressure on states, especially in the context of Sweden’s and Finland’s intentions to join NATO.
If the Senate and the American leader Joe Biden approve the decision of the House of Representatives, no sanctions against India will be introduced. Experts believe that failure to impose sanctions on India could lead to a demand for Russian weapons.
